Hollywood actor Sean Penn has signed on to play gay-rights icon Harvey Milk in Milk, a bio-pic directed by Gus Van Sant, Focus Features said Friday.
An activist and politician, Milk was the first openly gay man elected to public office in the United States.
In 1977, he was voted to the city supervisors' board of San Francisco.
The following year, he and the mayor were shot to death by another city supervisor, Dan White.
Co-financed by Focus and Groundswell Productions, Milk will be the first non-documentary feature to explore the man's life and career.
Penn has starred in the films Mystic River and 21 Grams, while Van Sant has helmed My Own Private Idaho and To Die For.
Gus Van Sant is the perfect artist to bring to the screen the extraordinary story of Harvey Milk, Focus CEO James Schamus said in a statement.
Groundswell CEO Michael London added: The Focus team is the best in the business when it comes to provocative, socially relevant movies with world-class talent like Gus Van Sant and Sean Penn. We're thrilled that they share our passion for telling the story of Harvey Milk.
Production is set to begin in January.Out In Tacoma is building a float for the 2007 Daffodil Parade. Not only are we walking in Tacoma's parade but are going to do Puyallup too! Tacoma Parade
Meet us before 10AM at 4th and Pacific (Shuster Parkway). I suggest parking around Freighthouse and taking the tram to 9th and Pacific. We are unit #135. This leg of the parade is not televised.
Puyallup Parade
When we disband form the Tacoma parade, we will be traveling to Puyallup for their leg of the parade. Join us at Noon, no later, and enjoy some snacks. We will be meeting at 7th Ave. SW and 5th Street SW (blinking light near Sparks Stadium). This parade will be televised on In Demand according to The Daffodil Parade peoples. We are float #135!
The theme of our float is "Working Together In Perfect Harmony" to match the Festivals theme of "Daffodils and All That Jazz". We will be playing funky Jazz music and passing out beads to the crowd. We glittered the heck out of this float, ya'll!
All support is appreciated. To find out more about our awesome Tacoma organization, check us out at www.outintacoma.org!

And, to start this blog off on the right foot, I give you *drumroll*, our first entry....
(CBS) Even though "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest and cranky judge Simon Cowell insist they're friends, they often have nasty exchanges during the live show.
Tuesday night's show was no exception.
It all started with a simple viewer question for finalist Melinda Doolittle.
"We have a question from Georgia," said Seacrest. "What do you consider the hardest part of this contest?"
"Wow," said Doolittle. "I would have to say the high heels and these dresses. I like my tennis shoes and my sweat pants," she said, shrugging her shoulders. "I'm sorry."
It all went downhill from there.
"Simon, any advice on the high heels?" Seacrest said, somewhat snidely.
"You should know, Ryan," responded Cowell, as the audience let out a whoop and fellow judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson rolled their eyes.
"Stay out of my closet, Simon," Seacrest responded.
"Well, come out," Cowell snapped.
"This is about the top twelve. Okay? Not your wishes," Seacrest quickly recovered, adding "We are friends."
